Buying loose lab grown diamonds by specification, not by photograph
A lab grown diamond is a specification purchase. Once you fix carat, shape, colour and clarity, the remaining variables are cut quality, fluorescence and certificate, and those three decide whether the stone is worth its price. Buyers who order from a photograph alone are routinely disappointed by cut quality, because a photograph cannot show facet symmetry or light return.
The specification fields that matter
| Field | Typical range we supply | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Carat | 0.01 ct melee to 5 ct and above | Above 3 ct, buy to order rather than holding stock |
| Shape | Round, oval, cushion, pear, marquise, radiant, emerald, princess, heart | Round and oval are the volume shapes |
| Colour | D to J; D to F premium, G to H mainstream, I to J value | Colour has the strongest effect on price above 1 ct |
| Clarity | VVS1 to SI2; VS1 to VS2 for retail consistency | VVS is a premium, VS is the volume retail grade |
| Cut grade | Excellent or Very Good where graded | Do not accept an ungraded cut above 1 ct |
| Fluorescence | None to faint preferred | Strong fluorescence can make a stone look milky |
| Growth method | CVD or HPHT, stated explicitly | Never accept a mixed-method parcel quoted as one grade |
| Treatment | Disclosed where applied | Some CVD stones are annealed for colour; require disclosure |
| Certification | IGI, GIA or NGTC above 0.30 ct | Report number inscribed on the girdle |
Melee parcels
Below about 0.30 ct, individual certification is not economic, so melee is supplied as calibrated parcels with a grading sheet: size range, for example 1.20 to 1.30 mm sorted to 0.05 mm, piece count, total carat weight, colour band and clarity band. Melee is the highest-volume lab grown diamond product in our range and the one where tolerance consistency matters most, because setting frames are cut to the parcel.
Certification and traceability
- IGI and GIA reports are available above 0.30 ct, with the report number laser-inscribed on the girdle so the physical stone can be verified against the paper.
- NGTC is available for buyers who need a Chinese-market report.
- A stone-to-certificate match sheet accompanies every order above 0.30 ct: SKU, carat, colour, clarity, report number and measured weight, line by line.
- A material declaration stating laboratory-grown origin accompanies every export shipment, which is what customs authorities require.
- We state the growth method and any post-growth treatment on the specification sheet. We do not mix methods in a parcel quoted as a single specification.
MOQ and pricing
| Product | MOQ | Certification |
|---|---|---|
| Melee parcels under 0.30 ct | Parcel basis, no piece minimum | Parcel grading sheet |
| Singles 0.30 to 0.99 ct | 20 pcs per size and grade | IGI or GRA on request, quoted separately |
| Singles 1.00 ct and above | 5 pcs per specification | IGI or GIA recommended |
| Large stones above 3 ct | 1 pc, made to order | IGI or GIA, required for resale |
Quality control
- Every stone measured with a caliper and weighed on a calibrated scale, with measurements recorded against the specification.
- Colour graded against master stones under controlled daylight, with a one-grade tolerance stated on the approval sheet.
- Clarity assessed at 10x by a trained grader, and inclusions on the girdle or near a future prong position are flagged.
- Cut symmetry and polish inspected for facet alignment and light return, particularly on emerald and princess cuts where misalignment is most visible.
- Certificate inscription verified against the physical stone before packing, and the match sheet signed off by the person who verified it.
