What loose moissanite is used for
Buyers purchase loose moissanite for three distinct purposes, and the specification differs for each: calibrated melee for halos, channels and pave; accent sizes for three-stone rings and earring settings; and large singles for solitaires and statement pendants. Selling them as one undifferentiated loose moissanite line is the most common planning error we see, because the sorting and tolerance requirements are completely different.
Parcel specifications
| Category | Size range | Sorting tolerance | Parcel documentation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Melee | 1.0 to 2.5 mm | 0.05 mm, or 0.03 mm on request | Size range, piece count, total carat, colour band, clarity band |
| Accent | 3.0 to 4.5 mm | 0.05 mm | Same, plus individual weight range |
| Centre | 5.0 to 8.0 mm | 0.1 mm | Same, plus count and average weight |
| Large singles | 9.0 mm and above | Individual, to specification | Individual weight and dimensions per stone |
The parcel sheet is the single most important document in a loose stone order. Without a stated actual size range you cannot plan a setting run, because a channel cut for 1.50 mm will not accept a parcel that runs 1.45 to 1.60 mm without rework. Always ask for the actual range rather than the nominal size.
Why tolerance matters more than price on melee
- Setting frames are sized to the stone. A 0.05 mm variance across a parcel is invisible in a finished piece, while a 0.15 mm variance means some stones sit loose and some will not seat.
- Channel work is the least forgiving. A channel is cut to a single width, so the parcel must be sorted tightly to it. Give us the channel dimension and we will match the parcel to it.
- Pave magnifies variance. Adjacent stones of visibly different sizes are the most common defect complaint in pave lines, and it is entirely a sorting issue rather than a stone quality issue.
- Reorders are where drift appears. We hold a master sample per parcel specification on file under your account, so a reorder can be matched against the previous batch.
Shapes and cuts
| Shape | Common sizes | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Round brilliant | 1.0 to 15 mm | The volume shape; cut quality affects brilliance most |
| Oval | 5x3 to 12x8 mm | Second most requested centre shape |
| Cushion | 4 to 10 mm | Popular in halo settings |
| Pear | 6x4 to 12x8 mm | Drop earrings and pendants |
| Marquise | 6x3 to 12x6 mm | Side stones and east-west settings |
| Emerald cut | 6x4 to 12x8 mm | Fewer facets, so cut precision is more visible |
| Princess, radiant, heart | Various | Order against specific demand rather than stocking |
Quality control on loose stones
- Size verified by caliper on a sample of at least 5% of each parcel, with the sample size recorded on the parcel sheet.
- Weight verified on a calibrated scale, with total carat stated to two decimal places.
- Colour assessed under a daylight lamp across the parcel rather than on a single stone.
- Cut quality assessed for symmetry and polish at 10x, and stones with visible facet misalignment are removed.
- Parcels sealed and labelled with size range, count, total carat and your SKU reference before dispatch.
