Why buy tools from the factory that uses them
We run these tools on our own benches every working day, which means we can tell you what breaks and what lasts. The commercial advantage for you is consolidation: tools sit under different HS headings from finished jewellery, so they must be declared as separate invoice lines, but they travel in the same shipment and share the freight. Buyers equipping a setting or repair bench alongside a retail business usually place one combined order and save a shipment.
The bench kit, category by category
| Category | Core items | What to check before ordering |
|---|---|---|
| Measuring | Ring gauges for US, EU, UK and JP, digital caliper, stone gauge, 10x loupe | Caliper resolution to 0.01 mm; plastic gauges wear and should be verified against steel |
| Holding | Ring clamp, bench peg, pin vise, third hand | Clamp jaw lining, because unlined jaws mark soft gold |
| Setting | Prong lifter, beading tool, gravers, burr set | Burrs in 0.1 mm steps from 0.8 mm; concentricity matters more than price |
| Finishing | Polishing motor, buffs, compounds, rouge | Voltage and plug standard for your market |
| Soldering | Torch, tweezers, soldering board, flux | Gas and aerosol restrictions on air freight |
| Cleaning | Ultrasonic cleaner, steam cleaner, solutions | Not suitable for emerald, pearl or plated silver |
| Storage | Gem jars, trays, parcel papers, sorting boxes | Parcel paper quality affects long-term stone identification |
Consumables: the repeat-purchase engine
Buffing wheels, polishing compounds, flux, burrs, gem jars and parcel papers are consumed constantly and reorder predictably. Unit margins are lower than on finished jewellery, but the repeat behaviour is far more reliable, which makes this category useful for smoothing cash flow and for keeping a trade account active between jewellery orders. If you supply trade customers, a consumables line is often the reason they contact you monthly rather than annually.
What to verify before importing equipment
- Voltage and plug standard. Motors and ultrasonic cleaners are region-specific. State your destination country explicitly, because a 220 V motor is unusable in North America without a transformer and the reverse applies.
- Spare part availability. Ask for motor brush and handpiece part numbers. If spares do not exist, plan to replace rather than repair, and price accordingly.
- Bulk versus retail packaging. Workshop buyers want bulk, because retail-packaged tools carry retail pricing that erodes your margin.
- Freight restrictions. Torches, aerosols and certain solvents cannot travel by air. Plan those for sea freight or source locally.
- HS classification. Tools are not jewellery. Confirm the correct heading with your broker so the invoice lines are classified separately and correctly.
Quality control
- Calipers and gauges verified against a reference standard before packing.
- Burrs inspected for concentricity, because an off-centre burr breaks prongs and it is the most common defect in inexpensive sets.
- Polishing motors run before packing, with brush condition recorded.
- Ultrasonic cleaner tanks leak-tested, because a leaking tank is not repairable and is a total loss on arrival.
- Packing separated from jewellery packing so that tools cannot damage finished pieces in transit.
